About Us
Hi there! My name is Jane and I've been a cat lover all my life. I began toying with the idea of fostering after following several other foster parents on social media. I thought that looks like something fun to do someday when my kids are grown and I have more time. But after watching the Kitten Bowl before the "Big Game" in 2019, I looked at my then 13 year old son and said why wait...let's do this! So we cleaned out the kids' playroom, bought all sorts of fun cat toys and soft blankets and visited our local rescue group. They were thrilled that we were interested in volunteering. Rescue groups are always looking for foster families (hint, hint!) A few days later we got the call to foster our first cat and it's been a revolving door of kitties ever since!
In addition to being a wife and mom, I'm also a small business owner. I'm a licensed at-home baker making all sorts of sweet treats, but pies are my specialty. My bakery, Pie a Bakeshop, is a year 'round business but my busiest times are during the summer months when I participate in local farmers markets. Since I started fostering I would always add the hashtag #piesandkittens to photos of my foster cats on my social media business page to let my customers know what I was up to in my "spare" time.
In the Spring of 2021 I had a hairbrained idea....what if I combined my love for baking with my love for cat rescue? After careful consideration on how to combine the two I came up with a plan. The name of my rescue was obvious...Pies & Kittens and the concept was simple...for every bakery sale a portion of it would be made as a donation back to the rescue. I filed all the necessary paperwork needed to establish a non-profit with the IRS and applied for a rescue license through my state...I was approved for both! It's a little daunting as now instead of just fostering I'm the one in charge of making all the important and difficult decisions. But I have an amazing support group in my husband and kids and a great community of folks in the rescue business.
I welcome you to follow along on my fostering (and baking) journey!
